Conexus is the new brand for an effort in Summit County that ties together many things important to a community's vibrancy: workforce, education, business retention and expansion, prosperity. Once known as Summit Workforce Solutions, Conexus was launched March 15, amid much fanfare, with more than 75 community members attending to hear from civic leaders why this is an important turning point for Summit County.
Greater Akron has an opportunity to make significant economic progress in the coming few years. With a new mayor and his cabinet, a strong county government, long led by a high-integrity executive who is focused on real quality of life issues (early childhood, workforce development, business retention and expansion, and public safety, to name a few), and the focus of Conexus on key growth sectors in our community, we are poised like never before to advance real growth. Conexus President Sue Lacy has quickly targeted support to grow advanced manufacturing, information technology and soon, health care, and identified opportunities to connect career-seekers to businesses in these important sectors.
As a member of the Fund, GAR Foundation's hope (and mine as a Conexus board member) is that the broader community uses this time to rally resources and attention on the critical work being advanced by Conexus, our manufacturing working group partners, our TechHire partners, and our educational institutions. We have a great chance right now, with all the stars aligned, to make a real difference by advancing the great assets in our community and truly "connecting work to prosperity."
