GO! A Blog about Growth & Opportunity

We're one week into 2016 and I wonder, how many of your New Year’s resolutions have you actually kept? Not passing any judgment here. It’s certainly never easy to stay resolute to exercising more, eating better, staying in touch with friends and family, or fulfilling any of the other common self-improvement promises we make at the stroke of midnight on December 31. But, in thinking about New Year’s resolutions at this time of year, I’m struck by how we can sometimes let personal intentions fall by the wayside, while we remain unwavering in our resolve to do good and improve as an organization, as a collaboration, as a city, as a county, as a region. Indeed, the Fund for Our Economic Future has a more than 10-year track record of staying this course. (Read more about our Fund's secret to keeping our resolutions here.)

What's helped us along the way is some self-assessment. Every three years since our inception, members of the Fund have engaged in a strategic planning process to collectively assess where the Fund has been and where it’s headed, and where and how philanthropy can make the biggest impact going forward, given the needs of Northeast Ohio residents. In essence, we make new resolutions, we assess, we evolve. Of course, everything we do is still designed to advance both economic growth and increased access to opportunity for the people of Northeast Ohio—an approach we call Growth & Opportunity. But our three-year objectives (ahem, resolutions) and subsequent strategies must naturally evolve to meet the challenges of the day.

Over the course of 2015, Fund members conducted such a strategic assessment, reaffirming philanthropy’s crucial role in transforming the Northeast Ohio economy and agreeing we are all better when we work together. In 2016-2018, our members have resolved to forward our mission and leverage our know-how by:

  • building shared community commitment to Growth & Opportunity throughout Northeast Ohio;
  • advancing a regional economic competitiveness strategy that results in Growth & Opportunity; and
  • shaping and supporting tangible Growth & Opportunity initiatives that lead to improved job creation, job preparation and job access.

These resolutions translate into more than a dozen different strategies -- some of them longstanding, others that are newer and responsive to emerging opportunities, and all of them focused on transforming our regional economy so that all people participate in and benefit from our growth. Want to know more? And. as we all make our commitments for 2016, I challenge you to hold us to these resolutions to make Northeast Ohio a better place for all people.
