Fund Treasurer Bill LaPlace Makes Crain's List of Eight Over 80

When Bill LaPlace joined a predecessor to financial giant Deloitte in 1953, the company was a very different place — no cell phones, no computers and a wide range of accounting work accomplished all in one office.

Now a retired partner with the multinational network known as Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL), LaPlace’s daily routine is also quite changed from the days he was growing the company’s tax department. The Fairview Park resident has a desk at Deloitte’s Public Square office, where he employs his well-honed tax expertise to manage a handful of charitable foundations and organizations.

So-called “retirement” finds LaPlace at his desk most every day for up to five hours, tracking and scrutinizing funding requests for, among others, the Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust, Cleveland Rotary Foundation, Lakewood Hospital Foundation and the Fund for Our Economic Future.

LaPlace ramped up his charitable efforts upon retiring in 1990, choosing organizations he had previously assisted as clients.
