EfficientGovNow Program Attracts 65 Potential Projects

CLEVELAND--April 16, 2009--The Fund for Our Economic Future, a collaborative effort to strengthen regional economic competitiveness in Northeast Ohio, received 65 project abstracts from partnerships of governmental entities looking to compete for EfficientGovNow awards.

“When we launched this program, we knew this topic was critical but we weren’t sure what level of interest there would be among our communities,” said Brad Whitehead, president, Fund for Our Economic Future. “We hoped we might see 15 applications and we received 65 from across the region. Clearly, the time is ripe for innovative steps such as these to strengthen our region’s economic competitiveness.”

The projects cover a wide array of collaboration and efficiency opportunities ranging from regional information technology systems and joint transportation facilities to public health services and storm water systems. Brief summaries of all abstracts are posted in the blog section of the program’s Web site, www.EfficientGovNow.org.

Under EfficientGovNow, governments in the region are encouraged to submit government collaboration and efficiency proposals to the Fund, which will provide a total of $300,000 to as many as three projects. Public comments on the abstracts will begin May 1.

Full project proposals, due May 31, also will be posted online for public review, and the residents of Northeast Ohio will ultimately select which of the collaboration projects will receive funding. The Fund will announce the finalists on July 1 and the public voting will take place throughout the month, ending July 31.

“We are tremendously encouraged by the number of local governments who are ready to step forward to find a better, more collaborative way to provide public services,” said Whitehead. “While three collaboration projects will receive funding at this time, each and every application for an EfficientGovNow award is important to strengthening our region’s economic competitiveness. “We hope that with the public’s support and encouragement, those efforts that don’t receive funding this time will push forward on their own.”
