CLEVELAND--April 20, 2010--The Fund for Our Economic Future has received, and posted for public review and comment, 27 detailed project proposals from governmental collaborations seeking EfficientGovNow awards.
EfficientGovNow is a competitive award and civic engagement program that encourages and accelerates government cooperation and efficiency by providing philanthropic funds to local government collaboration projects as selected by the residents of Northeast Ohio.
"We invite all Northeast Ohioans to review these projects, comment on our Web site and talk to their neighbors about these exciting collaborative projects," said Brad Whitehead, president of the Fund, a philanthropic collaboration of organizations and individuals that uses grantmaking, research and civic engagement to strengthen the 16-county region’s economic competitiveness. "The region wants and needs more efficient government. EfficientGovNow is a tangible way for residents to step up, let their voice be heard and decide who should get award money to accelerate government collaboration in Northeast Ohio."
The proposals, posted at www.EfficientGovNow.org, cover a wide array of collaboration and efficiency opportunities ranging from regional information technology and communications systems to the joint promotion of alternative energy to joint facilities to public health services and storm water systems. Currently, the Fund is offering as much as $330,000 to be shared among as many as four projects.
Northeast Ohioans will vote for the three best collaborations from a pool of finalists, and grants will be awarded to the top three vote getters. Additionally, the Fund has reserved the option to award a fourth grant to a collaboration involving smaller communities. The Fund will announce the finalists on April 30 and public voting will take place May 1 - 31.
"In these challenging economic times, it is heartening to see so many local governments step forward with collaborative and innovative ways of providing public services more efficiently," said Whitehead. "This program demonstrates that opportunity for collaboration and efficiency are everywhere. And while the Fund will only award funds to as many as four projects right now, we hope that the public’s support and encouragement will allow all of the collaborative efforts to achieve success."
Kent State University, which serves as the fiscal agent for the program, and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation are partners and sponsors of EfficientGovNow and its related activities.
